<\/span>Major Finnish forest industry companies reported weaker second-quarter profits this week, as the sector remains under pressure from geopolitical tensions, market volatility, and ongoing uncertainty around trade tariffs. A weaker U.S. dollar has further weighed on international operations.<\/p>\n

UPM Corporation reported on Thursday that second-quarter sales fell to 2.4 billion euros ($2.83 billion), down from both the previous quarter and the same period last year. Comparable operating profit declined 31% year-on-year to 126 million euros. The company also announced plans to close a paper mill in eastern Finland.<\/p>\n

Stora Enso posted a profit of 126 million euros, down 18% from 153 million euros a year earlier. Sales rose slightly to 2.43 billion euros, up from 2.30 billion in Q2 2024.<\/p>\n

Mets\u00e4 Group is scheduled to release its second-quarter results next week but has already issued a profit warning.<\/p>\n

Stora Enso CEO Hans Sohlstr\u00f6m said subdued and volatile demand is expected to continue throughout 2025 due to macroeconomic and geopolitical conditions. He noted that pulp prices could decline or remain flat over the summer and autumn, while some board products face downward price pressure amid soft demand.<\/p>\n

UPM CEO Massimo Reynaudo highlighted the impact of trade tensions and currency shifts. \"The U.S. tariff policy and subsequent responses have created uncertainty in global trade, weakening demand,\" he said. Reynaudo also noted that the depreciation of the U.S. dollar has negatively affected the company\u2019s pulp and communication paper businesses.<\/p>\n

The sector is also feeling the effects of the end of wood imports from Russia, which began several years ago. A July 9 editorial in the Finnish business daily Kauppalehti<\/em> said the halt in Russian supply has tightened the wood market across the Baltic region, pushing up prices. Reynaudo described raw wood prices as \u201cunsustainably high.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, the industry faces additional uncertainty from climate policy. A recent report by the Finnish Climate Change Panel stated that to meet the EU\u2019s 2040 target of a 90% reduction in emissions, Finland would need to sharply cut forest harvesting. Instead, the government has signaled a preference for boosting forest growth and carbon sink capacity, although recent studies suggest Finnish forests have shifted from being carbon sinks to net carbon sources.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
