<\/span>The European Union and the United States have reached a long-awaited trade agreement, ending months of escalating tensions with a deal that sets a 15% US import tariff on EU goods \u2014 including wood products \u2014 down from the 30% rate previously threatened by Washington.<\/p>\n

The agreement was concluded during private talks between US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the Turnberry resort in Scotland on Sunday. Both sides described the outcome as a breakthrough that will bring temporary stability to transatlantic trade.<\/p>\n

The deal covers nearly all EU exports to the US, with certain exceptions such as aircraft parts, chemicals, and select agricultural goods. European wood product exporters, including sawmills, panel manufacturers, and furniture producers, will now face a flat 15% tariff when selling into the US market.<\/p>\n

For the European wood sector, the outcome avoids deeper disruption but still places significant cost pressure on exporters. France and the Netherlands had lobbied for broader exemptions in sectors such as wine, beer, and specialty goods, but only limited carve-outs were secured.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tariff rate is not as low as we hoped, but it is far better than the 30% across-the-board measure that was on the table,\u201d said an EU trade official involved in the negotiations.<\/p>\n

According to 2024 figures, the US imported roughly $606 billion in goods from the EU, including an estimated $8.5 billion in forest-based products. The 15% tariff is expected to generate around $90 billion in revenue for the US Treasury this year.<\/p>\n

Trump called it \u201cthe biggest deal ever made,\u201d and von der Leyen acknowledged the US president's direct involvement, calling him \u201ca tough negotiator, but also a dealmaker.\u201d<\/p>\n

The EU also committed to boost its investment in US energy and defense industries, pledging $750 billion over three years for LNG, oil, and nuclear fuels \u2014 a move von der Leyen said would support Europe\u2019s shift away from Russian energy dependence.<\/p>\n

Still, European industry groups voiced concern over what they see as an unbalanced agreement. \u201cThis deal brings predictability, but at a high cost for value-added industries in Europe,\u201d said a spokesperson for CEI-Bois, the European Confederation of Woodworking Industries.<\/p>\n

The 50% global tariff the US imposes on steel and aluminium remains in place, and trade in alcohol remains unresolved, with talks continuing over possible exemptions for key exporting countries.<\/p>\n

The agreement is subject to approval by EU member states, whose ambassadors are scheduled to meet Monday for a formal briefing from the European Commission.<\/p>\n

The deal follows similar tariff arrangements the US has struck with Japan, the UK, and several Southeast Asian nations in recent weeks, as Trump pursues what he has described as \u201ca global rebalancing of trade.\u201d<\/p>\n
