<\/span>Swedish sawmiller Vida has become the third-largest softwood producer in Europe, following the acquisition of three sawmills previously operated by AB Karl Hedin.<\/p>\n

The transaction adds an estimated 550,000\u202fm\u00b3 of annual capacity, bringing Vida\u2019s total output to over 3 million\u202fm\u00b3 per year.<\/p>\n

The updated ranking reflects a broader trend of consolidation among Europe\u2019s major softwood producers. Total production by the leading groups is projected to reach 43.6 million\u202fm\u00b3 in 2025, up 12% from the previous year. This marks the third shift in the top three positions since the beginning of the year, underscoring the pace of structural change in the sector.<\/p>\n

Binderholz of Austria remains the largest producer, with output approaching 4.5 million\u202fm\u00b3. It is followed by Finland\u2019s Stora Enso, at around 4.1 million\u202fm\u00b3. Germany\u2019s Rettenmeier, which previously held third place, moves down one position following Vida\u2019s expansion.<\/p>\n

The acquisition gives Vida control of sawmills in Karbenning, Krylbo and S\u00e4ter, all located in central Sweden. The facilities will be integrated into Vida\u2019s existing operations, further strengthening its position in the domestic log market and in key export destinations.<\/p>\n

Europe\u2019s sawmilling industry has seen an uptick in investment activity, with producers expanding capacity in response to resilient demand, particularly from the construction sector and overseas markets. At the same time, increased volumes could exert downward pressure on prices in the second half of the year, especially if demand softens in export markets such as China, Egypt and the United States.<\/p>\n

Further changes in the rankings remain possible, as several companies are pursuing expansion plans or acquisitions.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
