The European Union\u2019s exports of softwood logs and lumber to China dropped sharply in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, reflecting weak construction demand in China and a shifting export landscape within Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Eurostat data, softwood lumber exports from the EU to China fell by 48%, from 657,738 cubic meters in H1\/2024 to just 341,513 cubic meters in H1\/2025. Among major exporters, Germany recorded the steepest decline, with volumes dropping by 77%, from 191,636 cbm to 44,990 cbm. Finland\u2019s exports fell by 45%, while Romania and Latvia saw declines of 46% and 59%, respectively.<\/p>\n

Sweden, however, managed to limit losses, posting only a 7% decline to 115,132 cbm.<\/p>\n

The downturn was even more severe in the softwood log sector, where total EU exports to China fell by 59%, from nearly 1.95 million cbm in the first half of 2024 to just 805,925 cbm in the same period of 2025.<\/p>\n

Germany, the largest EU exporter of logs to China last year, saw its shipments more than halve (\u201357%), while Poland\u2019s volumes dropped by 50%.<\/p>\n

Despite the negative trend, a few countries expanded their log exports to China. Latvia recorded a 54% increase, rising to 181,467 cbm, and Lithuania nearly doubled its exports, from 33,401 cbm to 63,273 cbm. Denmark also saw growth of 38%.<\/p>\n
