The United States has launched a wide-ranging investigation into imports of Brazilian timber and wood products, raising the prospect of sweeping new tariffs that could severely disrupt trade between the two countries. The probe, initiated by the Trump administration under Section 301 of the Trade Act, targets alleged unfair trade practices, corruption, and illegal deforestation linked to Brazil\u2019s booming timber industry.<\/p>\n
The move comes after mounting concern from American timber producers, who accuse Brazil of undercutting the US market with cheap imports that fail to meet equivalent environmental and labor standards. While the investigation includes other forest-based commodities, such as pulp and panels, the focus on timber is particularly significant given Brazil\u2019s growing role as a supplier of tropical hardwood and softwood plywood to the US.<\/p>\n
According to the American Loggers Council, over 150 primary and secondary wood processing mills have shut down across the US in the past three years, resulting in more than 10,000 job losses. A key issue is the traceability of Brazilian timber. Reports from the National Whistleblower Center suggest that between 23% and 30% of hardwood traded globally may originate from illegal logging, much of it from tropical forests. Although Brazil has implemented satellite-based monitoring systems and forest certification schemes, critics argue enforcement remains weak, especially in remote areas.<\/p>\n
Industry leaders in the southeastern US\u2014home to a major share of America\u2019s timber industry\u2014have welcomed the investigation. \u201cThis is long overdue,\u201d said David Livingston of the Mississippi Loggers Association. \u201cWe have an oversupply of raw materials in the US, but mills are closing because imports flood the market.
