President Donald Trump recently warned of new tariffs of up to 35% on some Canadian goods and directed the U.S. Commerce Department to assess whether foreign lumber imports pose a national security risk under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act. Currently, Canadian softwood lumber faces combined duties of approximately 34%.

In response to the Canadian statements, the U.S. Lumber Coalition (USLC) issued a firm rebuttal on July 16, rejecting the notion of setting aside U.S. trade laws in favour of a negotiated settlement.

“Canada does not simply get to choose whether or not it is subject to our trade laws,” said Zoltan van Heyningen, Executive Director of the USLC. He noted that U.S. authorities have repeatedly found Canadian producers to be engaging in unfair trade practices and that duties are expected to increase.

Van Heyningen also emphasized that over $7 billion in duties have already been collected from Canadian lumber companies and warned that any agreement to terminate current trade cases and return the funds would amount to "the single biggest bailout of the Canadian lumber industry funded by U.S. taxpayers."

Echoing the coalition's concerns, Andrew Miller, Chair and Owner of Stimson Lumber Company, praised President Trump's enforcement strategy, saying it has led to “massive investments” in U.S. production capacity. Miller called for continued strong enforcement to support American workers and increase domestic lumber supply for the construction sector.

The USLC also highlighted Canada’s heavy reliance on the U.S. market, with an estimated 60–70% of its softwood production being exported south of the border. Van Heyningen argued this structural dependency is “the root cause of Canada’s continued and harmful unfair trade practices.”

Looking ahead, the coalition has voiced support for the Trump administration’s decision to launch a Section 232 investigation into the potential national security risks posed by lumber imports, a move that could further restrict Canadian access to the U.S. market.

While Canadian officials have not directly responded to the USLC statement, Premier Eby said the federal government under Prime Minister Mark Carney is exploring ideas “that historically have been off the table.” Eby also confirmed that Carney is expected to visit British Columbia to discuss the matter further.

Despite recent conciliatory signals from Ottawa — including increased defence spending and the shelving of a digital services tax that had drawn U.S. criticism — it remains unclear whether Washington is willing to enter formal negotiations.

Meanwhile, U.S. homebuilders continue to warn that escalating duties could increase construction costs. The National Association of Home Builders estimates that higher tariffs could add as much as $11,000 to the price of a newly built home in the U.S.

For now, the two sides remain at odds, with Canada testing the waters on a potential compromise — and the U.S. lumber industry resolute in its call for continued trade enforcement.

The longstanding trade dispute between the United States and Canada over softwood lumber took another turn this week after British Columbia Premier David Eby suggested Canada may consider a quota system to limit exports to the U.S. — a move … Continue reading →

[4716

post-89083","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-trends","topic-forestry","topic-lumber","topic-sawmilling","topic-statistics","topic-wood-products","area-global","area-north-america

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
