<\/span>The German Chancellor expects EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to quickly prevent unnecessary bureaucracy for forest owners. Pressure on EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is increasing regarding the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Last week, the EU Parliament demanded a practical and low-bureaucracy EUDR with a zero-risk category.<\/p>\n

Urgent letter from Germany<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recently, 18 EU countries also urged EU Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen and EU Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall to simplify the EU Deforestation Regulation. Germany\u2019s Forestry Minister Alois Rainer (CSU) did not participate in the letter to the EU Commission.<\/p>\n

Apparently for the following reason: Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has meanwhile sent an urgent letter to his party colleague and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (CDU). In it, he demands that the EU President present proposals for a zero-risk variant promptly. This was confirmed by a spokeswoman of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMLEH). Time is pressing. The EU Deforestation Regulation is to come into force by the end of the year. The regulation was postponed by one year at the end of 2024 to allow practical adjustments. So far, the EU Commission has taken no action.<\/p>\n

A zero-risk category is supposed to prevent German forest owners from having to comply with extensive documentation requirements when marketing wood. After all, there is no deforestation risk in Germany, similar to Austria. Chancellor Merz considers this amendment of the deforestation regulation an important contribution to reducing bureaucracy, relieving European forestry and thus also to the competitiveness of the EU, writes the Bild<\/em> newspaper. Germany fundamentally welcomes the EUDR, said Merz.<\/p>\n

Bavarian Farmers\u2019 President G\u00fcnther Fel\u00dfner welcomes Merz\u2019s urgent letter to von der Leyen. Ahead of the Bavarian Cabinet meeting on Tuesday (July 15) at Zugspitze, Fel\u00dfner calls for urgent simplifications of laws such as the Nature Restoration Law or the Deforestation Regulation and for a bureaucracy moratorium to finally be implemented.
