U.S. President Donald Trump has renewed threats to impose higher tariffs on Canadian goods, sending a letter to Carney last week warning of duties of up to 35% on some products. Trump has also ordered the U.S. Commerce Department to assess whether imports of foreign lumber pose a national security risk — a move that could pave the way for further trade barriers.

The U.S. currently imposes a combined duty of 34% on most Canadian softwood lumber shipments. The duties follow longstanding U.S. claims that Canadian producers receive unfair subsidies through government-set stumpage fees on timber harvested from public lands — a claim Ottawa rejects.

In addition to trade friction, Canadian lumber producers are facing higher input costs, reduced harvest volumes due to wildfires, and the continued impact of a mountain pine beetle infestation that has devastated forests in western Canada.

While Canadian officials have expressed openness to dialogue, it is unclear how receptive Washington is to a negotiated solution. Despite Canada’s recent concessions — including an increase in defence spending and the scrapping of a proposed digital services tax — Trump has maintained a hardline stance on trade.

U.S. homebuilders, however, have warned that rising tariffs could push up construction costs. According to the National Association of Home Builders, Canada supplies nearly a quarter of the U.S. softwood lumber market, and Trump’s trade policies could increase the price of a newly built home by as much as $11,000.

“We have tariffs going on because we want tariffs, and we want the money coming into the United States,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s minister responsible for U.S. trade relations, declined to comment on Eby’s remarks.

Eby said Prime Minister Carney is expected to visit British Columbia soon to discuss the issue further.

Canada may consider imposing limits on softwood lumber exports to the United States in a bid to de-escalate a long-running trade dispute, British Columbia Premier David Eby said on Wednesday.
