The German wood processing industry is seeing improved business expectations for the first time since 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n

At its general meeting, the German Wood and Plastics Processing Industry Association (HDH) assessed the current situation in the sector. For the first time since 2022, business expectations are noticeably brighter. HDH President Johannes Schw\u00f6rer sees this as an important signal, but calls for political support to consolidate the emerging upswing. He calls in particular for tax relief, bundled funding programs, and EUDR monitoring through satellite surveillance.<\/p>\n

HDH President Johannes Schw\u00f6rer assessed the results of the latest HDH economic surveys during the meeting: \"Many companies are looking toward the second half of the year with greater confidence. Business expectations are showing a noticeably more optimistic mood for the first time since 2022. And this trend is not based solely on hope, but is also driven by the cautious stabilization in the construction sector. However, celebration is premature, as building permit numbers are rising only slowly. For many companies, the business situation therefore remains very tense despite the brighter expectations.<\/p>\n

In the last two months of May and June, the companies surveyed in the wood industry were more positive about their business expectations for the next six months than they have been since 2022. The HDH economic indicator is based on the ifo business surveys.<\/p>\n

Against this backdrop, Schw\u00f6rer called on Construction Minister Verena Hubertz to support the tentative economic recovery with further measures. \"Hubertz's announcement to halve construction prices is most likely to be realized by reducing the tax burden, which accounts for almost a fifth of construction costs. The federal government has direct leverage through sales tax, which can either be reduced or the depreciation options for buildings can be significantly increased.\"<\/p>\n

In addition, the funding currently distributed across numerous programs should be pooled and generously funded. \"The funding is not a loss-making venture for the government,\" explains Schw\u00f6rer. \"As soon as the construction industry picks up again, every euro of funding will be returned to the state coffers via income tax. In addition, states and municipalities benefit from higher property tax revenues, and the federal budget benefits from increased sales tax revenues.\"<\/p>\n

Satellite monitoring required for EUDR<\/strong><\/p>\n

In discussions with representatives of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Schw\u00f6rer also reiterated the call to use the postponement of the EU Deforestation Directive to fundamentally revise its regulations. The HDH President suggested satellite monitoring: \"The problem of deforestation doesn't exist here. And yet the EU Commission wants forest owners and the entire timber industry to maintain cumbersome deforestation records. Our proposal is that the EU itself should use satellite images to monitor whether areas are being deforested or damaged. The technical possibilities for this exist: Satellite images are already being used to calculate EU agricultural subsidies to monitor the size, health, and type of use of arable land. This could easily be introduced for the forestry and timber industry as well. This would prevent high, unnecessary administrative burdens for the domestic timber industry and would finally mean taking the issue of reducing bureaucracy seriously.\"<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
