<\/span>The US will impose tariffs of 30 percent on European goods, President Trump writes on social media. \"The US has now escalated in several ways,\" says the EU's trade commissioner. If no solution is reached before August 1, tariffs of up to 30 percent will be imposed on goods imported into the US from the EU.<\/p>\n

Donald Trump writes in one of his famous letters to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that the United States has chosen to move forward with a \"balanced and fair\" trade agreement.<\/p>\n

Rikard Forslid, professor of economics at Stockholm University, tells SVT that it would be \"catastrophic if it were implemented.\"<\/p>\n

''Tariffs at that level could mean that over half of the trade flow between Europe and the US is eliminated.''<\/p>\n

''I think he will back off a bit and that we can eventually end up at ten to 15 percent,'' says Forslid.<\/p>\n

Regrets the decision<\/strong><\/p>\n

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic from Slovakia comments on the announcement:<\/p>\n

''We note with regret and disappointment the letter sent to us by the President of the United States, especially considering how far our ongoing negotiations have reached,'' he says.<\/p>\n

He promises to do everything he can to avoid a crash.<\/p>\n

''We are showing enormous patience, enormous creativity to find a solution. But if it is 30 percent or more, trade as we know it will not be able to continue, '' says Sefcovic.<\/p>\n

Sweden's Minister of Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa (M) believes that the EU has done what it could from its side of the negotiating table.<\/p>\n
