The modeling, known as WEHAM, serves as a key reference for forestry policy and wood industry stakeholders.

In 2022, Germany’s total standing timber stock was estimated at 3.6 billion harvested solid cubic meters (Efm). The WEHAM forecast shows a temporary dip to 3.4 billion Efm by the mid-2030s, followed by a gradual recovery toward today’s levels by 2062.

Softwood losses, hardwood gains

While total wood stocks remain steady, the composition is changing. Softwood reserves – mainly spruce and pine – are projected to decline from 2.1 billion to 1.8 billion Efm, driven by storm damage, pests, and adaptation to climate risk. Fir and Douglas fir will see slight increases, while larch remains flat.

In contrast, hardwood stocks are set to rise markedly – from 1.55 to nearly 1.9 billion Efm – with beech and oak leading the expansion. Ash volumes are also expected to rise modestly, while alder will fall sharply. These trends reflect both natural regeneration and a shift in forest management strategies toward climate-resilient mixed stands.

Industry groups say the growing hardwood availability presents new market opportunities but warn that current utilization rates remain well below potential.

Slower harvest, shifting age profile

The model also predicts a moderate decline in the annual sustainably usable raw wood potential, from 88.8 million m³ in 2022 to 77.9 million m³ by 2062. Softwood cuts will account for most of the reduction. For hardwoods, growing standing volumes are offset by longer rotation periods, limiting annual harvest potential—particularly for species like beech and alder.

Despite this, total usable volumes are expected to remain sufficient for domestic demand, with average annual raw wood availability forecast at 80.6 million m³ over the next four decades.

Forest age structures are also shifting. Young stands (under 20 years) and very old stands (over 160 years) are both expected to increase, while middle-aged forests (41–80 years) will decline. The forest is, overall, getting older – a trend that could influence both harvest cycles and biodiversity.

Industry calls for policy support

German timber industry associations responded to the report by urging policymakers to remove barriers to active forest management and timber mobilization, particularly in small private forests and protected public lands. The German Sawmill and Timber Industry Association (DeSH) emphasized the need for new markets for hardwood, as well as strategies to maintain softwood supply, especially pine, for the construction sector.

The Wood Energy Association sees increasing hardwood availability as a chance to expand the role of biomass in Germany’s energy mix, but warned of persistent regulatory obstacles.

Meanwhile, the Forest Owners Association (AGDW) called for incentives to reduce overstocked stands in southern Germany, citing both carbon storage efficiency and climate risk mitigation.

Germany’s long-term timber supply will remain broadly stable over the coming decades, but significant structural shifts are expected as hardwood gains ground while traditional softwood species such as spruce and pine decline, according to new projections from the Thünen Institute. … Continue reading →

[4716

post-89062","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-trends","topic-forestry","topic-lumber","topic-price-analysis-and-info","topic-sawmilling","topic-statistics","topic-wood-products","area-europe","area-global

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
