This shift reduced the availability of redwood grades in certain categories such as U/S, 5th, and 6th grade, causing gaps in supply specifications for several mills.

With strong demand and some supply constraints, prices rose not only in the UK but across European and US markets during the early part of Q2. However, UK traders remained cautious, reluctant to commit to long-term purchases until the market showed consistent signs of recovery.

By June, the market began showing signs of strain. Demand for structural softwood dropped noticeably as merchants became more conservative, causing prices to stabilize and then decline. This downturn triggered reactive price cuts from distributors trying to manage stock levels.

Contributing to this cooling demand were delays and postponements in new construction projects initially scheduled to begin in Q2. Several major developers deferred project start dates or delayed launching new phases, catching timber suppliers off guard and reducing the pace of stock turnover.

Multiple factors are impacting the new housing sector, including hold-ups in planning approvals and infrastructure challenges like adequate water and power availability. Additionally, a shortage of qualified labor continues to restrict construction capacity. Despite government initiatives aimed at ramping up building activity, these efforts have yet to translate into sufficient demand to revitalize the timber sector.

Efforts by industry groups, including Timber Development UK and its partners, to promote wood as a sustainable, low-carbon building material are gaining traction with architects and specifiers. Yet, much of this interest remains at the design stage, without converting into actual construction activity. While timber frame usage is gradually increasing, stronger momentum is needed to establish a dependable and robust market.

Looking ahead to the summer break when many mills reduce production, importers hope that this slowdown will help clear excess inventory from the supply chain and support price stability.

Meanwhile, Sweden—the UK’s primary source of imported softwood—is experiencing ongoing industrial strikes disrupting trailer logistics at ferry ports. With no resolution in sight, the industry anticipates increased use of break-bulk shipments from alternative ports to bypass these delays.

UK softwood markets experienced solid trading momentum through April and May, continuing the positive trend that followed a steady first quarter, where imports rose just under 2% compared to the same period in 2024.
