<\/span>European hardwood sawmills, particularly those supplying beech lumber, are under mounting pressure from Chinese buyers to reduce prices. The calls for price cuts have intensified in recent weeks as the euro continues to appreciate against both the US dollar and the Chinese yuan, weakening the price competitiveness of European products in global markets.<\/p>\n

Over the past few months, the euro has steadily gained in value, reaching levels not seen in several years. For buyers in China, this currency movement means that European hardwood products, which are already perceived as premium, have become significantly more expensive in local currency terms. As a result, many Chinese processing companies\u2014facing tighter domestic margins and softer downstream demand\u2014are asking their European suppliers to lower prices in order to maintain purchasing volumes.<\/p>\n

Market participants report that the price sensitivity is particularly pronounced in the beech segment, where China remains the largest and most important export destination for many European mills. In some cases, buyers have paused new orders entirely while waiting for more favorable pricing conditions. Others continue to order but are requesting immediate reductions of \u20ac30 to \u20ac50 per cubic meter, depending on product type and specifications.<\/p>\n

Despite these pressures, most European sawmills have so far resisted large-scale price adjustments. Many point to stable log procurement costs, high production expenses, and limited domestic market support as reasons why room for discounts is extremely limited. At the same time, exporters acknowledge that if the euro continues to strengthen and Chinese buyers remain firm in their stance, adjustments may be inevitable to prevent further loss of market share.<\/p>\n

Shipments from Europe to China remain steady for the time being, as most deliveries currently reflect orders placed earlier in the year. However, industry insiders warn that if the current standoff continues through the summer, export volumes may begin to slow in the autumn months.<\/p>\n

Some exporters are exploring ways to hedge currency risk or shift more volumes to alternative markets such as the Middle East or North Africa, though these destinations typically command lower prices and smaller volumes compared to China. Others hope that the exchange rate will stabilize or that Chinese buyers will soften their demands if domestic inventories begin to tighten.<\/p>\n

For now, the pressure on European producers continues to build.
