Global forestry giants are under mounting pressure from shifting trade policies and declining market demand. Finland\u2019s Mets\u00e4 Group has issued a profit warning,<\/span> reporting a \u20ac35 million operating loss for the second quarter of 2025\u2014marking a dramatic \u20ac116 million reversal from the \u20ac81 million profit recorded in Q1. The company, one of the largest forest industry groups in the world, described the situation as a \u201cperfect storm\u201d that has had a \u201cclearly negative impact\u201d on its financial performance.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Mets\u00e4 attributed the loss primarily to continued weakness in pulp demand across Europe and China. At the same time, uncertainty surrounding U.S. trade policy\u2014particularly tariffs\u2014has intensified the strain. Subsidiary Mets\u00e4 Board was forced to make significant adjustments to its production plans in response to shifting customer behavior caused by U.S. tariff threats.<\/p>\n

\u201cCustomers have delayed or reduced orders out of concern that tariffs will increase. To manage inventory, we\u2019ve had no choice but to reduce production,\u201d a company representative said. These adjustments have directly impacted short-term revenues.<\/p>\n

The situation has been exacerbated by recent moves from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has ramped up tariff threats in the lead-up to the 2025 elections. Trump recently sent letters to the leaders of 14 countries\u2014excluding China\u2014announcing new tariff measures and extending all \u201creciprocal\u201d tariff regimes through August 1. In the letters, he expressed dissatisfaction with U.S. trade deficits and signaled tariffs as a response to what he deems \u201cunfair trade practices.\u201d For export-oriented sectors like forestry, which depend heavily on transatlantic trade, this has introduced even greater volatility. European companies like Mets\u00e4 are among the first to feel the effects.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth noting that this turbulence isn't an isolated case. Earlier this year, the European Union had proposed retaliatory tariffs worth $1 billion on U.S. wood and pulp products\u2014though implementation was later delayed. Nonetheless, the proposal sparked concern across the industry.
