Exports of wood products, paper, and pulp to the U.S. are fluctuating significantly as the industry awaits decisions on new trade tariffs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"747\" data-end=\"1173\">\u201cThe year started unexpectedly strong for the Swedish sawmill industry, but it is now clear that the recovery has stalled. The construction climate remains weak, while the industry has to balance high cost levels with strained raw material supply, risks of reduced competitiveness linked to currency, and a potential trade war,\u201d said Christian Nielsen, wood products market analyst at the Swedish Forest Industries Federation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1175\" data-end=\"1398\">Overall, deliveries of wood products increased by 5.3 percent from January to May compared to last year. The development looked particularly positive in March, which was one of the strongest delivery months in recent years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1400\" data-end=\"1823\">\u201cThere were high hopes that the Swedish construction market would pick up again, but those hopes were dashed during April and May. The increased ROT deduction (tax relief for renovation, conversion, and extension) and the lower interest rates have so far not had the effect the industry had hoped for, and we now see clear indications that the weak trend in Sweden will continue through the summer,\u201d said Christian Nielsen.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1825\" data-end=\"2077\"><strong data-start=\"1825\" data-end=\"1856\">Possible stockpiling effect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1825\" data-end=\"2077\">As a silver lining, Swedish export prices rose in May despite strong currency headwinds. The U.S., the U.K., and the Netherlands are markets where Swedish wood products have performed relatively well during the spring.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2079\" data-end=\"2420\">\u201cThe U.S. market has been very volatile, driven by major uncertainties, timing issues, and possibly some stockpiling effects related to the threat of future tariffs. So far, European wood products are completely exempt from trade tariffs while the U.S. is investigating wood supply as a national security issue,\u201d Christian Nielsen explained.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2422\" data-end=\"2766\">Production of pulp and paper has also been weak, with output 1.7 percent lower than last year. Exports declined by 1.4 percent. However, deliveries to the U.S. increased, with sales of market pulp as well as paper and carton growing by 12.7 and 13.9 percent respectively during the period \u2014 despite 10 percent tariffs imposed since early April.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2768\" data-end=\"3086\">\u201cThis suggests there is something of a rush to the U.S. in certain segments. A likely explanation is that companies want to avoid even higher tariffs, which Trump has threatened during ongoing negotiations with the EU,\u201d said Charlotte Dickens, pulp and paper market analyst at the Swedish Forest Industries Federation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3088\" data-end=\"3425\"><strong data-start=\"3088\" data-end=\"3140\">Internal market could become even more important<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3088\" data-end=\"3425\">Overall, between 5 and 10 percent of Sweden\u2019s annual forest industry production goes to the U.S., while about 65 percent remains within Europe. If negotiations between the U.S. and EU result in new higher tariffs, the impact on the Swedish forest industry is expected to be limited.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3427\" data-end=\"3768\">\u201cExports of wood products to the U.S. are likely to continue from both Sweden and Canada for the foreseeable future, but perhaps not with the strong growth we expected. In times of trade restrictions and protectionism, the already important European internal market and the U.K. could become even more significant,\u201d said Christian Nielsen.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3770\" data-end=\"4181\">\u201cFor pulp and paper manufacturers, further tariff increases could mean a gradual reduction in exports to the U.S. over the longer term as the industry seeks to diversify risks and build new trade relations. If the trade conflict impacts the global economy, the effects could be far greater \u2014 this applies not only to the forest industry but to Sweden as an exporting nation as a whole,\u201d Charlotte Dickens added.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The construction market is losing momentum, which means ongoing challenges for Swedish sawmills.
