The value of these imports rose by 28.1% to USD 75.56 million.<span id=\"more-38500\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"343\" data-end=\"492\">Notably, nearly 96% of this volume\u2014570,000 cubic meters\u2014was logs, representing a 25.5% year-on-year growth. Of these logs, 99% were softwood species.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"494\" data-end=\"836\">In the first four months of the year, the average price of Japanese logs exported to China ranged between USD 123 and USD 131 per cubic meter, up approximately 3% compared to the same period last year. These prices are slightly higher\u2014by USD 2\u20133\u2014than those of China\u2019s mainstream softwood log imports from New Zealand (primarily radiata pine).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"838\" data-end=\"1260\">With sustained growth in imports from Japan, the country ranked as China\u2019s seventh-largest overall wood supplier and the fourth-largest source of logs\u2014behind only New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Russia\u2014as of the end of April 2025. However, Japan still accounts for a relatively small portion of China\u2019s total log imports, representing just 7% of the 7.97 million cubic meters imported during the same four-month period.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1262\" data-end=\"1639\">In fact, China became Japan\u2019s largest log export destination as early as 2018, reaching the highest level in 41 years. In recent years, Japanese logs have continued to gain traction in the Chinese market, driven by competitive pricing and increased demand. In 2024, China\u2019s imports of Japanese logs reached 1.648 million cubic meters, marking three consecutive years of growth.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1641\" data-end=\"2068\">One key reason for this upward trend is Japan\u2019s strategy to increase the harvesting of its plantation forests. With nearly 40% of the population affected by pollen allergies\u2014largely due to aging cedar and cypress plantations\u2014Japan has committed to raising its plantation logging rate to 20% over the next decade. This move is aimed not only at mitigating health issues but also at enhancing the economic value of felled timber.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2070\" data-end=\"2233\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Given China\u2019s vast demand for logs and its geographic proximity, Japanese logs have benefited from both strong market potential and favorable transport conditions.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to China Customs data, between January and April 2025, China imported a total of 593,100 cubic meters of wood from Japan, marking a year-on-year increase of 25%.
