<\/span>Swedish sawmill giant Vida Ab has announced reductions in log prices in southern Sweden, marking the first price drop in ten years.<\/p>\n

Vida\u2019s CEO J\u00f6rgen Henriksson told Swedish financial newspaper ATL that tight conditions in the sawn timber market are the main reason behind the decision. Despite spring usually being the peak season for plank sales, demand has fallen short of sawmills\u2019 expectations this year.<\/p>\n

Adding pressure, prices for sawmill by-products have also declined, while the Swedish krona has strengthened against the euro.<\/p>\n

Vida\u2019s website lists price cuts of 100 SEK (\u20ac9) per cubic meter for spruce logs and 150 SEK (\u20ac13.6) for pine logs. Small logs and beams have seen reductions of around \u20ac6.<\/p>\n

According to ATL, forest owners\u2019 cooperative S\u00f6dra recently paid on average over 1,500 SEK (\u20ac135) per cubic meter for spruce logs in southern Sweden. Private sawmills reportedly pay about 200 SEK more.<\/p>\n

These prices are roadside prices, which include harvesting costs, unlike stumpage prices commonly used in Finland. Moreover, Swedish cubic meters are measured without bark, requiring over 10% more wood compared to Finland\u2019s bark-included volume.<\/p>\n

Vida plans to run all 12 of its sawmills at full capacity this coming autumn. However, Henriksson said the company is prepared to cut production if forest owners reduce timber sales in response to the price cuts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to safeguard company profitability, and if we cannot increase finished product prices, we must lower raw material costs,\u201d Henriksson explained to ATL.<\/p>\n

Vida\u2019s production capacity is 2.8 million cubic meters of sawn timber, making it the largest sawmill operator in G\u00f6taland.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
