Roundwood prices continued to rise in May to a record high. Timber trade was brisk, although volumes were lower than the exceptionally high May volumes of the previous two years. The trade volume between January and May was 8% higher than a year ago and almost a quarter higher than the average for the previous five years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Timber prices<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In standing sales in May, the average price paid for spruce logs was nearly EUR 86 and pine logs EUR 84. Their average prices rose by 1% in real terms from the previous month. The average price of birch logs rose to EUR 68.<\/span><\/p>\n

Standing sales prices for logs have risen to exceptionally high levels. The last time average monthly prices were as high was in 2007-2008.<\/span><\/p>\n

In standing sales of pulpwood, the average price paid for spruce was around EUR 36, and for birch and pine over EUR 34. Prices rose by 1-2% from April.<\/span><\/p>\n

In delivery sales, average prices for all types of pulpwood rose to over EUR 54 per cubic metre.<\/span><\/p>\n

The monthly statistics started in 1995 have never recorded such standing sales prices for pine and birch pulpwood, and the last time the average price for spruce pulpwood was this high in real terms was in 2007. Pulpwood delivery prices were also at record levels.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trade volumes<\/strong><\/p>\n

In May, 14% less industrial roundwood was purchased from private forests than one year earlier. However, the volume was 15% higher than the average for the previous five years, as the May timber sales volumes were exceptionally high in 2023 and 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n
