The total import value stood at 35.15 billion yuan (approx. €4.5 billion), representing a 14.3% drop from the same period in 2024.

In May alone, wood imports amounted to 4.966 million cubic meters, with a value of 7.09 billion yuan (approx. €900 million). This represents a 17% decline compared to May 2024 and a 7% drop from April 2025. Overall, the May figures continued the downward trend in wood imports that has persisted since the beginning of the year.

Port-level developments: shrinking inventories and slow demand

With June marking the start of the off-season for China’s construction sector—traditionally the primary consumer of wood—the pace of new projects is slowing down. Data shows that log inventories at Chinese ports dropped to 3.35 million cubic meters in May, down by 150,000 cubic meters from the previous month. Daily average deliveries from ports only fell slightly—by about 10,000 cubic meters compared to April.

Industry insiders emphasize that the decline in port inventories is not primarily driven by a recovery in end-user demand. This is evident from early June figures, which highlight regional market imbalances and overall market pressure:

Shandong ports remained relatively stable, with daily average deliveries at 33,800 cubic meters, up 2.11% week-on-week from June 2–8.

Jiangsu ports saw a minor 0.44% decrease, down to 22,800 cubic meters daily.

Hebei ports recorded a notable 16.67% increase, but with only 7,000 cubic meters delivered daily, their impact on the national average remains limited.

In South China, high temperatures and rainfall suppressed activity. Ports in Fujian and Guangdong saw their daily average deliveries fall by 2.13% (around 4,600 m³) and 20% (around 1,200 m³), respectively.

Supply constraints and weak margins dominate the market

Most analysts attribute the recent inventory declines to tightening supply, rather than stronger demand. Regional variation in market activity underscores a broader trend: thin margins and sluggish sales are putting pressure on the entire sector.

Externally, importers are squeezed by the triple burden of high freight costs, currency exchange fluctuations, and import tariffs. Internally, inverted domestic wood prices and weak momentum from the construction sector are eroding purchasing incentives downstream, leading to sluggish port deliveries.

Looking ahead, the continuation of hot and rainy weather in June and July is expected to further slow construction activity. In this context, the pace of inventory clearance at ports may remain under pressure.

According to the latest customs data, China imported a total of 24.146 million cubic meters of wood (logs and lumber) in the first five months of 2025, down 13.3% year-on-year—a sharp decrease of 3.709 million cubic meters.
