Drought is boosting logging in Germany, but the threat is already looming over the next bark beetle epidemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sawmills in northern Germany are suffering from a shortage of softwood logs. Softwood lumber exports from the country are doing well again and prices have risen, but sawmills are having trouble getting enough softwood logs.<\/p>\n

Timber harvesting is taking place at a rapid pace in southern Germany due to dry harvesting weather and high demand for spruce logs.<\/p>\n

The long-lasting damage caused by the bark beetle in Germany has reduced the possibilities for felling spruce logs in large areas. The shortage of softwood logs in the north is being made up for by felling in southern Germany, from where the wood is transported north. The harvest has been promoted by exceptionally dry weather.<\/p>\n

On the flip side, the drought is causing fears that a new bark beetle epidemic will break out in the country this summer after a few calmer summers. The drought is even affecting long-distance timber transport, as the water levels on river routes are already too low in some places for timber transport.<\/p>\n

Softwood lumber prices are rising<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a result of strong demand, the price of softwood logs has increased by about one euro per week in southern Germany during the spring. In May, prices per cubic meter of spruce logs were paid at the roadside at \u20ac105\u2013115. Pine log prices are practically at the same level as Finnish purchase prices, at \u20ac80\u201390.
