<\/span>The Finnish Sawmill Industry Federation and the European Sawmill Industry Association EOS are demanding that the EU take action to impose sanctions on Russian sawn timber in Japan. The sawmill industry hopes that Finnish decision-makers will raise the issue officially through the EU but also directly in discussions with the Japanese. EOS, in turn, is approaching the EU Trade Commissioner on the matter.<\/p>\n

Last year, 14 percent of Japan's lumber imports came from Russia. Imports from Russia increased by 13 percent from the previous year. The growth has continued in the first quarter of this year.<\/p>\n

\"Russia is a major player in the sawmill industry and their opportunities for action must be limited as much as possible. One way would be to have an active dialogue with like-minded democratic countries, such as Japan. The flow of Russian wood products to Japan should be cut off urgently,\" says Tino Aalto, CEO of the Finnish Sawmilling Industry Association, in a press release.<\/p>\n
