The number of job losses could rise to 1,400 in the coming weeks, the company said in a statement released Wednesday.

Rémabec, based in La Tuque, employs about 2,000 people and is one of Canada’s largest private forestry groups. The company blamed “persistent imbalances in both access to the resource and international markets,” noting it was hoping for “a return to operations as soon as economic and structural conditions will allow it.”

The move comes as the U.S. prepares to more than double tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber. The company also cited higher roundwood prices in Quebec as further eroding competitiveness.

The softwood lumber dispute has long been a flashpoint in Canada–U.S. trade relations. Industry officials say many U.S. buyers stocked up ahead of the tariff hike, leading to oversupplied yards and diminished short-term demand from American builders.

A person familiar with the situation, who asked not to be named, said sawmill closures are likely to continue if prices remain depressed and duties rise further.

Quebec Forestry Minister Maïté Blanchette Vézina said in an email that the ongoing dispute and regulatory uncertainty are forcing a reassessment of forestry operations. “Impediments to forestry activities can create tensions and supply issues,” she said.

Rémabec also criticized the provincial regulatory framework, calling the business environment “increasingly unstable, without predictability or coherence.” Quebec’s government has been working to update forestry laws, though it has faced delays and pushback from Indigenous groups.

Canadian lumber producer Groupe Rémabec will temporarily lay off more than 1,000 workers in Quebec, citing surging U.S. duties and weakening market conditions that have made operations unsustainable.
