Meanwhile, global market uncertainty and geopolitical tensions have dampened New Zealand timber exports to key destinations including the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

China, New Zealand’s largest log export market, is also showing signs of fatigue. From January to April 2025, Chinese imports of New Zealand logs fell 4% year-on-year to 5.89 million cubic metres, while average import prices dropped 5%, remaining below last year’s levels for four consecutive months.

Despite CFR prices for A-grade logs holding around USD 110, importers in China continue to face losses. Industry analysts say that only a significant reduction in inventory levels could trigger a price rebound. With fewer working days in April and winter approaching, shipments to China are expected to decline further.

Under pressure, New Zealand exporters are accelerating efforts to diversify markets. Industry consensus is growing around reducing overdependence on China. In that context, India—whose timber imports have been expanding steadily—has emerged as a key target.

New Zealand’s sawn timber exports to India totaled just USD 10 million over the past five years, but the market's potential is considerable. India imported USD 2.27 billion worth of wood and wood products in recent years, sourcing from countries such as Malaysia, Germany, Indonesia, Ukraine, and China. Rapid growth in India's domestic woodworking industry is also fueling demand.

The New Zealand Timber Industry Federation (NZTIF) highlights India's strong and rising need for various wood products and argues that New Zealand’s key advantage—radiata pine—should be front and center in any trade expansion.

Radiata pine is known for its ease of processing and versatility. NZTIF notes that New Zealand follows strict sustainability standards in forest management and timber transport. The federation has proposed marketing radiata pine as a “universal wood,” suitable for both high-end decorative use and broader applications such as construction and packaging.

Whether New Zealand can successfully pivot to India and break away from its “single-market dependence” hinges not only on the competitiveness of its log pricing but also on its ability to deepen market penetration and build lasting trade relationships.

A successful expansion into India would help New Zealand mitigate risks tied to China’s slowdown and global market volatility—while opening a large, fast-growing alternative for the country’s log exports.

A sharp drop in Chinese demand for New Zealand logs is prompting the country’s exporters to shift their focus toward India, a fast-growing market that may help reduce reliance on a single trade partner.
