After announcing the closure of its Ransby sawmill in Sweden back in May, Moelven is now considering shutting down its sawmill operations<\/span> in L\u00f8ten, Norway. The board of Moelven L\u00f8ten AS<\/strong> said the move is being evaluated due to weak profitability, driven by high raw material prices, high production costs, and a challenging softwood lumber market.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t see how we can maintain sawmill operations at L\u00f8ten going forward. These are difficult times in our industry,\u201d said Anders Lindh<\/strong>, chairman of the board. \u201cThe market is weak, and product prices don\u2019t reflect the cost level. This hits Moelven L\u00f8ten particularly hard, given its relatively low production volume and limited ability to spread fixed costs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moelven L\u00f8ten, which the group has owned since 2000, currently employs 28 people. The mill specializes in coarse pine lumber and produces around 40,000 cubic meters of softwood lumber annually, including niche products such as center-free heartwood for cladding, glulam blanks, standard and coarse dimensions.<\/p>\n

The announcement follows the confirmed closure of Moelven Notn\u00e4s Ransby AB<\/strong>'s sawmill operations in Ransby, Sweden, which will affect 24 employees. According to Lindh, the company had hoped to see stronger market signals before making any decisions, but rising log prices have outpaced the recent modest gains in sales prices.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly sad to deliver this kind of news to our people, but we have to run a profitable operation. That forces us to evaluate the group\u2019s structure. We don\u2019t see a basis for prioritizing the investments needed to secure long-term profitability at these two mills,\u201d said Lindh.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
