Homanit, a leading German producer of wood-based panels, has announced plans to invest $250 million in a new manufacturing facility in Clarendon County, South Carolina \u2014 its first operation in the United States. <\/span>The facility will be built on a 140-acre site near the rural community of Alcolu, just off Interstate 95, and is expected to create 300 new jobs when it opens in 2028.<\/p>\n

The plant will manufacture high-precision wood fiber panels used in furniture, interior doors, and the automotive industry \u2014 products that are increasingly in demand across the U.S. The investment comes at a time when South Carolina\u2019s forestry sector is seeking new markets following the closure of several major paper mills in recent years. State Forester Scott Phillips called Homanit\u2019s announcement \u201cthe largest forest products manufacturing investment in the state in more than three years\u201d and a welcome development for pine pulpwood markets.<\/p>\n

Homanit currently operates production sites in Germany, Lithuania, and Poland. Its expansion into the U.S. is part of a broader international growth strategy. \u201cThis investment marks a significant milestone for our company, and we\u2019re proud to become part of such a vibrant and forward-looking region,\u201d said Managing Director Fritz Homann. \u201cThe area\u2019s skilled workforce, strategic location, and strong infrastructure make Clarendon County the ideal foundation for our next phase of growth in North America.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project is the largest single investment in Clarendon County\u2019s economic development history, according to Central SC Alliance President Jason Giulietti. In return for its commitment, the company has secured a reduced property tax rate of 4% for 40 years, compared to the standard 6% rate under South Carolina\u2019s current tax code. Additional incentives include $2.1 million in county grants, $2.2 million in reimbursements, and state income tax credits worth $20,250 for each new job created.<\/p>\n

Clarendon County Council Chairman John Johnson III praised the announcement as a transformative moment for the region. \u201cThe economic impact of a project of this magnitude will be felt throughout our community for generations to come,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Local officials noted that the county, through its economic development arm, has spent more than a decade preparing the site for industrial use, investing in road expansions and utilities with the help of state-funded grants. County Administrator Lynden Anthony added that the agreement includes further tax credits that may reduce the company's tax liability even more, though specific details were not immediately available.<\/p>\n

Commerce Secretary Harry Lightsey hailed the investment as a strong endorsement of South Carolina\u2019s forestry and manufacturing sectors. \u201cHomanit\u2019s decision to establish such a large operation in Clarendon County represents a tremendous vote of confidence in our state\u2019s ability to support international investment and advanced manufacturing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Construction on the facility is expected to begin in the near future, with production planned to ramp up over the next few years.<\/p>\n
