As a result, both countries have sought alternative sources, increasing log imports by 25% in 2024 compared to the previous year. Still, the total remains only half the level seen in 2006.

The supply gap has triggered a sharp increase in raw material costs. In Q4 2024, wood accounted for nearly 73% of cash production costs in Finnish manufacturing, and 64% in Sweden. Finnish softwood pulp log prices surged 51% compared to 2021, while hardwood rose 54%. Swedish prices for similar products climbed between 30% and 40%.

The struggle to replace Russian wood has been exacerbated by imbalanced global supply and demand and rising freight costs. Analysts expect that pressure on European wood supply and pricing will persist in the short term.

In addition to supply-side constraints, evolving international trade policies are squeezing profitability for Nordic exporters.

The United States, Finland’s third-largest market for forest products, introduced new tariffs on EU pulp and paper goods in 2024. Although some categories were exempt, the overall uncertainty has created new obstacles for exporters.

At the same time, a weakening dollar against the euro and Swedish krona has further eroded price competitiveness. In Sweden, where 60% of forestry output relies on exports, currency fluctuations have eaten into profits and complicated long-term planning.

Customs data shows that Finland’s wood exports to China fell by 57% in volume and 54% in value in the first four months of 2025, even as average prices rose by 8%. Sweden recorded a 23% drop in export volume and an 18% decrease in value, while average prices rose by 6%.

Segmented by species, prices for fir and spruce lumber increased between 4% and 7.6%, while red pine and Scots pine jumped by more than 11%.

Nordic lumber producers are facing soaring raw material costs and rising production costs causing China to lower its purchases due to rising prices.
