The main cause: the large and ever-increasing demand for biomass for energy generation.

At a press conference during the Interzum in Cologne, the European Panel Federation laid a heavy bombshell on the table: two independent studies, carried out separately on behalf of the EPF, using different methods, show that the demand for wood and wood fibres will exceed the (European) supply in 2040. The biggest 'culprit' is the energy sector, which already consumes 60 percent of the wood mass and that share is increasing. The panel manufacturers themselves only consume about 8 percent of all the wood that is felled in Europe. The rest is used for all kinds of applications, of which the paper industry is an important one.

The EPF has summarised these studies, which were conducted on its own initiative by research agency AFRY Management Consulting and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), in a 'position paper' called Strategic Wood Availability. With this, it is entering the lobby process in Brussels. The approach of the manufacturers of wood fibre-based panel materials is that there should be a much better cascading of wood in the economy: high-quality wood first serves as a building material, can be reused and then, after the end of its useful life, can be shredded to serve as fibre for panel materials. It can then be used as pulp in the paper industry and/or finally be incinerated. The EPF also wants to advocate for less use of biomass for sustainable energy generation and more use of solar and wind energy. And if it has to be biomass, the trade association advocates for more use of other, faster-growing and lower-value forms of biobased materials.

The European Federation of Wood Panel Manufacturers is now certain: if policy remains unchanged, there will be insufficient wood in Europe by 2040, at least for the panel industry.
