Shipments of softwood logs fell by nearly 27% year-on-year to 430,000 cubic meters in the first quarter, while exports of softwood lumber and panels varied. Particleboard and OSB volumes declined, especially to Poland, although exports to France and Belgium posted modest gains. Austria and China remained the top destinations for German logs, accounting for roughly 70% of total log exports despite the overall decline.

Analysts link the export downturn to a mix of softening international demand and logistical constraints, including low water levels on key rivers. The closure of UPM's paper mill in Plattling has further disrupted the market, forcing producers and forest owners to redirect volumes previously destined for the paper industry. These are now being absorbed by OSB manufacturers, fencing producers, or the animal bedding segment.

Despite foreign trade volatility, domestic consumption is acting as a stabilizing force. Sawmills report healthy margins, supported by stronger export prices to North America earlier in the year. However, uncertainty remains around U.S. trade policy. Lumber futures in Chicago have experienced sharp swings in response to special tariffs that were imposed and later paused by the U.S. government.

Prices for various timber assortments have continued their upward trend, particularly for softwood packaging materials and solid wood. Market participants report weekly price increases of around one euro per cubic meter, with spruce logs now trading at €105 to €115 per cubic meter in southern Germany. Longer logs are fetching even higher prices, up to €120 per cubic meter, depending on quality and region.

Demand for softwoods remains robust across the country, especially in the northern states, where supply remains tight. This ongoing pressure has reinforced price increases in southern regions, where weather conditions since the start of the year have enabled uninterrupted logging and transport operations, further supporting market stability.

The strong demand has also lifted prices for less common species. Pine segments are selling for €80 to €90 per cubic meter, while larch and Douglas fir are reaching up to €140 per cubic meter. However, storm damage from late 2023 and infrastructure limitations for long-distance transport in some areas have created localized supply bottlenecks.

Prices for lower-quality beetle-damaged logs continue to be discounted by around €20 per cubic meter. The risk of a renewed bark beetle outbreak remains high, as persistently dry conditions threaten to undo progress made in reducing pest populations.

In the hardwood segment, market dynamics are more complex. A shortage of beech logs is pushing prices higher amid growing demand, but many forestry operations are still focused on softwood harvesting, limiting available labor for hardwood cuts. The oak market is increasingly divided: high-quality logs are attracting strong interest and firm prices, while lower grades have fallen below 2024 levels. Forest health concerns are growing due to increasing damage from beetles and other pests

Germany’s timber exports present fragmented picture in the first quarter.
