This has eased pressure on port volumes and helped bring supply back in line with demand in key Asian markets.

Across China’s eastern seaboard, daily log consumption has remained consistent at around 60,000 cubic meters. Although this is below historic peaks, it reflects a healthy baseline. Inventories remain high, at about 4.1 million cubic meters, but reduced log vessel arrivals from New Zealand in May are expected to help correct the imbalance.

Log prices landed in China have remained relatively stable, falling only slightly—by roughly €2 per cubic meter compared to April. The combination of moderated export volumes and a strengthening New Zealand dollar has helped reduce pressure at the wharf gate.

Earlier price declines were primarily driven by oversupply, partly the result of a few New Zealand exporters offering long-term fixed-price contracts well above sustainable levels in order to gain market share. These strategies have introduced volatility and carry significant risk if market conditions remain soft.

In India, prices and volumes held steady in May, and sentiment now suggests the market may have bottomed out. The exit of a trader who had distorted the market through overpricing purchases and undercutting sales—funded through fraudulent credit documents—has contributed to a more stable trading environment.

At Kandla port, nine log vessels were discharged in April, with eight expected in May—still slightly above ideal market volume, though bond stocks are now low. While daily consumption is not formally tracked, the drawdown in unsold inventory hints at improved off-take.

Within New Zealand, the modest rise in domestic demand—particularly from sawmills—is a positive sign. While the export market remains cautious, the combination of better supply discipline and steady demand in Asia offers grounds for cautious optimism.

As ever, the long-term message remains clear: for climate resilience, national prosperity, and future forestry returns, continued investment in tree planting is critical.

Export log prices from New Zealand appear to have reached the bottom of the current cycle by mid-May, supported by improving activity in China and India.
