Forests continue to disappear\u2014despite a growing number of countries introducing log export bans in an effort to preserve what remains. But the latest research delivers a sobering reality check: in countries that implemented such bans, deforestation actually increased<\/em> by an average of 22.3%.<\/p>\n

The study, conducted by researchers at Universit\u00e9 Clermont Auvergne in France and other institutions, analyzed data from 124 countries over a 20-year period. Their conclusion is blunt\u2014these policies are failing. But why?<\/p>\n

Dr. Mohamed Zerbo, one of the lead researchers, explains that while the bans are well-intentioned, they often backfire. On one hand, restricting log exports slashes profits for logging firms and exporters. In response, many shift their operations toward agriculture, intensifying the competition for land between farms and forests. The result: expanding farmland and shrinking forest cover.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the bans push down international log prices. This makes it cheaper for domestic wood processors to secure raw materials, fueling a rise in local processing activity. Foreign firms, particularly those lacking large-scale processing capacity, are drawn to invest. Their growing demand for logs places even greater pressure on forest resources.<\/p>\n

The bans also cause a major redistribution of economic benefits. While logging and export sectors lose out, the wood processing industry gains\u2014reshaping national economies and labor markets in the process. Notably, in many developing countries, the shift has led to a 25% increase in employment, driven mainly by growth in the processing sector\u2014not by forest protection.<\/p>\n

In a related study, Craig Johnston of Louisiana State University\u2019s Department of Agricultural Economics used the Forest Resource Outlook Model (FOROM) to simulate the impact of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) on global wood production, trade, and prices. His findings suggest that countries with high deforestation risks\u2014such as Brazil, Indonesia, and Malaysia\u2014could see steep declines in log output and exports. This would trigger ripple effects in sawnwood and panel prices.<\/p>\n

Conversely, countries with low deforestation risks, including Canada and the United States, may slightly increase their wood production to meet the EU\u2019s rising demand under the new regulation.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
