Wood pellet prices in Germany dropped sharply in May 2025, even as domestic production reached a record high for the first quarter. According to the German Pellet Institute (DEPI), the average price per tonne of pellets fell 7.9% from April to \u20ac315.89, continuing a downward trend driven by ample supply and moderate demand.<\/p>\n
Prices vary across regions for typical orders of six tonnes. In southern Germany, pellets cost \u20ac310.65\/t, while central regions recorded an average of \u20ac320.46\/t. Northern and eastern Germany reported the highest prices at \u20ac325.27\/t. Bulk orders of 26 tonnes traded at lower rates: \u20ac297.04\/t in the south, \u20ac305.41\/t in central Germany, and \u20ac310.49\/t in the north and east.<\/p>\n
Despite falling prices, German pellet producers reported a strong start to the year. Q1 production reached 948,000 tonnes \u2014 the highest volume ever recorded for a first quarter. This marks an increase of approximately 40,000 tonnes compared to both Q4 2024 and Q1 2024.<\/p>\n
The share of bagged pellets fell significantly to 17%, down from 28.1% in the previous quarter and 20.1% in the same period last year. Export volumes also declined, with just 9.1% of pellets sent abroad \u2014 well below the 2020\u20132024 average of 14.8%.<\/p>\n
Sawmill residues remained the dominant raw material, accounting for 92.9% of production inputs, though this was slightly below the previous quarter\u2019s 95.3%. Notably, industrial-grade pellets made up 1.4% of output, double the 0.7% average from the previous year.<\/p>\n
Analysts say that abundant supply, mild weather, and stable heating demand have eased price pressure across the market.
