The latest figures reflect shifting dynamics in supply chains and end-user demand across the wood products industry.

The Producer Price Index (PPI) for softwood lumber rose 3% month-on-month in April, matching the 3% increase in March. The back-to-back gains were largely driven by tight supply conditions, particularly for conifer species. Spring labor shortages at sawmills in the U.S. West and an 8% year-on-year drop in Canadian softwood imports have pushed up prices for key grades such as spruce and pine.

Within softwood segments, construction-grade lumber saw the sharpest gains, rising 4.2% in April. Analysts say the seasonal boost from spring home renovation demand helped offset headwinds from high interest rates in the housing market. However, prices for softwood veneer and plywood retreated, falling 1% in April after a 3% increase in March, as downstream processors struggled to absorb elevated raw material costs.

In contrast, hardwood prices remained flat in April following a modest 1% uptick in March, signaling temporary stabilization. Prices for oak and walnut narrowed in volatility, supported in part by a 5% month-on-month increase in tropical hardwood imports from Southeast Asia, which eased previous supply constraints. Still, weak demand from the furniture sector—reflected in a manufacturing PMI of 48.7 for a second month—limited any upward pricing momentum.

Wood product prices showed signs of marginal improvement. April prices rose 0.1%, ending a 1% decline in March, a trend attributed to a slight rebound in custom furniture orders after the Easter holiday. However, overall demand remains subdued. Plywood prices reversed their March increase, slipping 0.4% in April amid lower-than-expected procurement from construction-linked projects.

The broader U.S. PPI for final demand declined 0.5% in April, the steepest monthly drop since April 2020, largely due to a 0.7% fall in service prices. In contrast, lumber was among the few industrial categories to post back-to-back monthly gains, underscoring divergent sectoral drivers. Softwood continues to benefit from structural supply gaps, while hardwood struggles with tepid downstream consumption.

Over the past 12 months, the final demand PPI rose 2.4%, still above the Federal Reserve’s 2% inflation target. But price divergence within the lumber sector suggests that conventional inflation trends may not apply uniformly across subsectors. Investment banks warn that if seasonal construction demand underperforms, softwood’s recent price gains could unwind. Any hardwood recovery will likely hinge on export trends and domestic furniture sales in the second half of the year.

U.S. lumber prices are showing structural divergence, with softwood prices climbing for a second consecutive month while hardwood prices hold steady, according to April data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
