Total foreign sales of wood products excluding pulp and paper reached US$339.1 million, an increase of 17.9% year-on-year, according to Ibá (Indústria Brasileira de Árvores). But despite higher volumes, pricing pressure continues to weigh on margins.

Pine sawnwood was a key driver of growth. Export volume rose to 286,200 m³, up 40.1% compared to March 2023. Export value increased 45% to US$65.2 million, lifting the average price to US$228/m³, compared with US$219/m³ a year earlier and US$224/m³ in February. Higher North American demand contributed to the rebound, though prices remain well below pre-2022 peaks of over US$270/m³.

Pine plywood shipments also increased, reaching 126,600 m³, up 42.8%, with export revenues totalling US$54.9 million (+35.2%). However, average prices fell to US$434/m³, down from US$460/m³ in March 2023 and flat versus February, reflecting global competition and persistent overcapacity in Asia.

Tropical sawnwood volumes improved modestly to 23,700 m³, up 44.1%, but export value climbed just 25.3% to US$9.5 million. This pushed the average price down to US$401/m³, compared with US$456/m³ a year earlier. Weak demand in the EU and Middle East continues to put pressure on tropical hardwood prices.

Meanwhile, wood panels (including MDF and particleboard) brought in US$33.5 million, a 2.2% increase year-on-year, though volume data remains flat. Wooden furniture exports totalled US$56.8 million, up 9.7%, helped by moderate demand in the United States and Mexico.

Currency dynamics have offered partial relief to exporters. The Brazilian real weakened slightly in Q1, making shipments more competitive. Yet rising domestic logistics costs, driven by higher fuel prices and port congestion, continue to erode margins.

Regulatory risks loom. Brazilian officials have asked the European Union to delay enforcement of the new anti-deforestation regulation (EUDR), set to apply from end-2024. Without an extension, compliance costs could rise significantly, especially for producers of tropical timber.

The short-term outlook for Brazil’s timber sector is mixed. Export volumes may remain resilient through mid-2025, but average prices are unlikely to recover meaningfully unless global supply tightens or demand strengthens in core markets. For now, most gains are volume-led and margin-thin.

After a weak start to 2025, Brazil’s timber exports showed signs of stabilisation in March.
