However, the suspension on imports of U.S. logs (Customs Announcement No. 29 of 2025) remains in effect, meaning U.S. logs continue to be banned from the Chinese market despite tariff reductions elsewhere.

The tariff adjustments have already boosted trade activity. Logistics platform FlyingShop’s founder Ryan Peterson reported a 35% surge in sea freight bookings from China on the first day following the announcement—contrasting sharply with a 64% drop in bookings in early April amid tariff uncertainty.

Industry experts note that since late May, China’s exports to the U.S. have rebounded strongly, filling shipping capacity on East and West Coast routes and pushing 40-foot container freight rates up by approximately US$1,000.

Timber industry insiders expect the tariff relief to accelerate order fulfillment, as some companies aim to clear backlogs during the window of opportunity. Yet, cautious traders remain wary, especially given ongoing log import restrictions which could destabilize supply chains.

Regionally, the domestic timber market shows divergence: prices for American timber have fallen in northern hubs like Qingdao, while southern markets face high prices but sluggish sales and inventory backlogs due to weak demand.

The tariff deal provides a short-term boost, with American exporters likely to increase stockpiling and demand from China rising. Still, companies must maintain flexibility amid risks of sudden policy shifts.

The continued U.S. log import ban may push Chinese processors toward alternative sources such as Canada and Europe, potentially reshaping global timber supply chains long term. Additionally, fluctuating international freight rates and geopolitical tensions add uncertainty.

The 90-day tariff pause, reducing Chinese reciprocal tariffs to 10%, triggered a rush among U.S. buyers to maximize deliveries before the window closes. This surge is driving container price hikes not only on China–U.S. routes but also on other shipping lanes due to capacity reallocation.

The deal also sparked a significant rise in Chinese orders for European logs and lumber. The Euro weakened nearly 5% against the RMB from its April peak, encouraging Chinese buyers who had held off purchases amid prior Euro strength.

On May 12, China and the United States announced a “Joint Statement of the China-US Geneva Economic and Trade Talks,” reaching consensus on several tariff issues with measures to be implemented by May 14, 2025.
