Several producers were reported to be under growing pressure due to rising stockpiles, particularly of Southern Yellow Pine (SYP), which saw price declines accelerate as competitively priced Western softwoods entered traditional southern markets.

“Right now, a lot of folks are sitting on their hands,” said a regional distributor in Georgia. “We were hoping mortgage rates would start to ease by spring, but that hasn’t happened.”

Western Spruce-Pine-Fir (SPF) saw moderate interest from buyers, with a handful of larger-volume transactions suggesting some market participants see current levels as close to a bottom. In some regional markets, 2×12 prices have fallen by over $100 per thousand board feet in the past three weeks.

Futures prices for lumber posted a rebound last week after a multi-week slide, briefly restoring some confidence. However, market participants said futures and physical prices remained closely aligned, and few were willing to call a clear turning point.

Meanwhile, the treating segment of the market—responsible for pressure-treated outdoor lumber—has slowed notably. Many buyers in that segment placed orders in advance of the Memorial Day holiday and have since paused new purchases.

Looking ahead, traders said pricing may remain under pressure in the short term unless there is a clear shift in housing demand or policy developments. With the U.S. Federal Reserve holding rates steady and global trade negotiations still in flux, most see little reason to expect a major recovery in demand through early summer.

U.S. lumber prices continued to trend lower in mid-May, with framing lumber values slipping again as uncertainty surrounding interest rates and trade policy kept the market on edge.
