Only 10% expect prices to fall, with pessimism concentrated in southern regions. Meanwhile, 5% of buyers, mainly in northern Sweden, anticipate price increases exceeding 10%.

On a five-year horizon, expectations are more diverse. Some 45% foresee a 10–30% increase from today’s prices, while 35% project modest growth of up to 10%. A fifth of respondents expect prices to decline by more than 10%, though none anticipate gains above 30%.

Timber prices in Sweden have risen sharply in recent years, driven by strong demand and tightening supply. The biggest gains have been recorded in the southern regions of Svealand and Götaland, while northern Norrland has seen more moderate increases. Over the past year, prices rose 26% in Svealand and 22% in Götaland, compared with 11% in northern Norrland.

Looking ahead to 2030, buyers expect further price gains across the country, with the strongest growth likely in Norrland.

War, sanctions, and limited harvests driving prices

The war in Ukraine and sanctions on Russian timber have curtailed global supply, supporting prices. Buyers also point to long-term demand for wood as a renewable construction material as a key driver of price growth.

“There’s a natural ceiling on how much can be harvested each year,” one respondent said. “That puts pressure on supply and supports the market.”

Construction sector activity and sawmill profitability were cited as the main downside risks. A recovery in construction is seen as necessary to sustain current price levels. Some also noted that an end to the war and a potential re-entry of Russian timber to the market could ease supply constraints and weigh on prices.

Regulations seen as biggest supply risk

Timber buyers identified environmental regulations as the biggest challenge to raw material supply. Respondents cited the EU’s biodiversity rules, Sweden’s Species Protection Ordinance, and carbon sink requirements under LULUCF as potential barriers to harvesting.

“There is growing pressure to preserve forests rather than manage them for production,” one buyer said, adding that public sentiment has become increasingly negative toward forestry.

Supply risks vary by region. Buyers in southern Sweden expect tighter conditions for sawlogs, while pulpwood supply is seen as more secure, supported by the age structure of Swedish forests.

Key factors supporting timber prices:

War in Ukraine

Sanctions on Russia

Strong demand for renewable materials

Limits on annual harvests

Construction market recovery

Top supply risks:

EU and national environmental regulations

Forest preservation mandates

Negative public opinion on logging

Uneven forest age distribution

Most timber buyers in Sweden expect log prices to remain stable or rise slightly in 2025, with supply constraints and steady demand underpinning the market, according to a new survey.
