<\/span>Timber prices in Estonia showed signs of stabilization in April after several months of decline, driven by subdued demand in key European export markets and a cautious recovery in domestic construction activity, market participants said.<\/p>\n

Softwood sawlog prices have begun to level off, with average roadside prices for pine and spruce logs hovering around \u20ac65\u201370 per cubic meter, according to local forest associations. Birch pulpwood prices remained under pressure, trading at \u20ac25\u201330\/m\u00b3, amid weak demand from Nordic pulp mills and reduced Chinese interest.<\/p>\n

\"The market is not good, but at least the freefall seems to have stopped,\" said Rein Tamm, a procurement manager at a southern Estonian sawmill. \"We're seeing more stable offers from Germany and Finland, but volumes remain low.\"<\/p>\n

Exporters continued to face slow demand in April and early May, particularly in Germany and the UK, where sluggish construction activity has limited timber imports. Estonia\u2019s timber exports in Q1 2025 were down roughly 14% year-on-year, according to preliminary customs data.<\/p>\n

Producers have responded by scaling back harvesting volumes and prioritizing higher-value processed wood products. However, industry leaders warned that profitability remains tight, especially for smaller sawmills struggling with elevated fuel and labor costs.<\/p>\n

\"Energy prices have eased slightly since winter but are still historically high,\" said Kadri Vaher, an analyst with the Estonian Forest and Wood Industries Association. \"That continues to affect drying and transport costs, particularly for exports.\"<\/p>\n

With EU green regulations and biodiversity directives limiting clear-cutting in some regions, supply may tighten in the second half of the year, potentially offering some support to prices. However, a full recovery is unlikely unless Western European construction picks up or overseas demand rebounds, analysts said.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
