<\/span>Stora Enso's planned sawmill for Imatra would clearly be the largest in the country. It is clear that it will need the logs currently going from eastern Finland to Joutseno Honkalahti, and much more. According to the environmental permit and start-of-operation permit application prepared by the consulting company Afry, the sawmill will be located in the Tainionkoski factory area of \u200b\u200bthe Imatra mills. Construction would begin next year, and operations would begin in phases in 2028.<\/p>\n

The sawmill uses 60% pine logs and 40% spruce logs, a total of approximately 1.7 million cubic meters per year. The production is 800,000 cubic meters of finished lumber, of which approximately 250,000 cubic meters are planed. The sawmill is single-line and 2.07 cubic meters of wood are needed to produce one cubic meter of sawn timber. The size of the logging field is 12 hectares. To prevent pollution, the logs are irrigated during the summer, and irrigation water is taken from Lake Saimaa.<\/p>\n

Rauma sawmill provides a point of comparison<\/strong><\/p>\n

By-products include wood chips, sawdust, bark and cutters. Pine chips go directly to the Tainionkoski pulp mill. Spruce chips are transported to Stora Enso's other Imatra mill, the Kaukop\u00e4\u00e4 CTMP plant, for a chemical pulping plant. The sawdust and bark are used for energy. The sawmill's logistics are mainly handled by road and rail transport. The sawmill is designed for continuous, uninterrupted three-shift operation throughout the year. The number of employees is 150\u2013170 people.<\/p>\n

The Regional State Administrative Agency of Southern Finland aims to process permit applications within a ten-month period, i.e. by the end of February next year.<\/p>\n

The Imatra sawmill project can be compared to the fact that the largest sawmill in Finland, Mets\u00e4 Group's Rauma sawmill, which started operations in 2022, cost around 260 million euros and can use 1.5 million cubic meters of pine logs.
