In the past, Missouri’s wood sector benefited from U.S.-China trade, but this traditional industry is now experiencing unprecedented disruption due to the lingering effects of tariffs imposed during the Trump administration.

A sharp drop in export orders, collapsing market prices, and struggling businesses — this “butterfly effect” triggered by trade policy has pushed Missouri’s export-dependent wood industry into a “deep freeze” as summer approaches.

According to the Missouri Forest Products Association, about 60% of the state’s wood was originally destined for China. But since the tariffs were enacted, that trade route has been nearly severed. Association Executive Director Brian Brookshire stated, “The obstruction of international exports has created tremendous uncertainty.” He explained that wood intended for export had to be redirected to the domestic market, but limited demand caused prices to plummet and profit margins to shrink drastically.

With international demand continuing to shrink, a company based in Fayette said its shipments have ground to a halt, and inventory is piling up. MOPAC (Missouri Pacific Lumber Co.) is among the hardest hit. Its president, Bucky Pescaglia, revealed that trade with China has been “completely cut off,” and even shipments already in transit have been left in limbo.

“We’ve tried rerouting, returning goods, or exploring other markets, but the results have been negligible,” Pescaglia said. “This crisis is far worse than the 2018 trade conflict.”

Industry insiders pointed out that alternative markets such as Southeast Asia and Europe have wood specification and pricing requirements incompatible with U.S. production, and rising international logistics costs are making restructuring extremely difficult. Brookshire admitted, “Many small and mid-sized mills are on the brink of bankruptcy.”

The fallout from blocked exports is spreading across the U.S. domestic wood market. With massive stockpiles accumulating, domestic prices continue to fall. To maintain cash flow, companies are forced to sell at deep discounts, creating a vicious cycle. The Missouri Forest Products Association warned that without policy relief, more than 30% of wood businesses in the state may shut down within a year.

In the domestic Chinese market, due to differences in material types and specifications, North American lumber trends vary sharply between northern and southern regions. In northern markets such as Qingdao, prices for North American lumber are falling steeply. Meanwhile, in the south, prices are rising but actual shipments remain scarce, and inventories are building up.

Meanwhile, customs data show that as of Q1 2025, before relations fully soured, U.S.-China wood trade displayed a mixed picture: total trade value rose 5% year-on-year to $330 million, but import volume dropped 9% to 620,000 cubic meters. At the same time, the average unit price surged 16%. Analysts believe that in the long run, high tariffs will push Chinese buyers toward lower-cost suppliers, while the U.S. wood sector will face deeper supply-demand imbalances and an increasingly bleak outlook.

As a key pillar of the state’s economy, Missouri’s forest products industry contributes over $10 billion annually.
