The conflicting tariff announcements over a span of two months left Western Canadian suppliers hoping for more stability, but field inventories remained low across the continent, leading to supply struggling to meet inconsistent demand.

Uncertainty, particularly regarding tariffs on Canadian lumber entering the U.S., contributed to delays across North America. Some stakeholders chose to hold off on lumber purchases, waiting for clarity on the tariff situation, while others decided to place orders early to secure delivery before potential trade restrictions took effect. Additionally, some switched their purchasing focus to Southern Yellow Pine, moving away from northern species like Spruce-Pine-Fir. This shift led to an increase in Southern Yellow Pine prices compared to SPF, as U.S. customers within the local market received the lumber they needed for ongoing projects.

As the situation continued to evolve, buyers and sellers worked together to assess the current market conditions and establish new price levels. By April, prices for North American construction framing dimension softwood lumber began to stabilize, reflecting the current balance of supply and demand.

However, demand remained relatively weak, especially for the time of year when new home building typically picks up. While some uncertainty regarding macroeconomic conditions had been resolved, expectations for the upcoming spring building season were still unclear. A notable trend was the price disparity between primary and secondary suppliers, which led some buyers to stay on the sidelines, waiting for further price adjustments.

Lumber production data indicates a slight decline in sawmill activity. U.S. sawmill production in January 2025 was 2% lower than in January 2024, while Canadian production dropped 3.4% over the same period. Weather, including a harsher winter in 2025, played a role in slowing manufacturing activity. U.S. sawmills were running at just 67% of full capacity in January, compared to 72% in 2024, while Canadian sawmills were at 74% of capacity, slightly down from the previous year.

Canadian sawmills typically operate at 95% utilization, while U.S. sawmills run closer to 80%. Despite these lower utilization rates, there is significant lumber supply available that could come back online at existing facilities should demand pick up in the summer months.

Lumber futures fell below $550 per thousand board feet, hovering at yearly lows as excess supply from winter restocking collided with a 14.2% drop in U.S. single-family housing starts to an annualized 940,000 units in March, pushing new-home inventories to … Continue reading →

[4716

post-88815","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-trends

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
