As the infestation subsides, fellings have rapidly declined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"420\" data-end=\"773\">The drop is largely due to reduced insect damage. \u201cLast year was rainy, and there were no widespread printer disasters,\u201d said Olli Oksanen, CEO of Finnharvest Germany. This year, the company is mostly carrying out thinning operations near Berlin, though summer could bring renewed activity if drought persists. March was the driest on record in Germany.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"775\" data-end=\"1191\">After peaking at over 60 million cubic meters annually in 2020 and 2021, spruce and conifer harvests fell below 38 million cubic meters last year. The return to pre-crisis logging levels has caused localized log shortages, particularly in northern Germany, western regions, and Bavaria. Sawmills now procure spruce logs from hundreds of kilometers away. Roadside prices have risen to \u20ac103\u2013115\/m\u00b3, up \u20ac5\u201310 this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1193\" data-end=\"1612\">Despite sluggish construction in Central Europe, German softwood lumber exports to the US have grown since early 2025. However, uncertainty surrounds the impact of potential US-EU tariffs. Tino Aalto, CEO of the Finnish Sawmilling Association, warns that EU counter-tariffs could affect German exports, which are the largest from Europe to the US.
