Despite this, sawn timber prices rose year-on-year, supported by increased delivery volumes and a tight supply situation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"436\" data-end=\"799\">Sales in the group\u2019s <em data-start=\"457\" data-end=\"488\">Pulp and Sawn Timber Industry<\/em> unit rose to EUR 788.7 million in Q1 2025 from EUR 584.5 million in the same period last year, driven by higher pulp and lumber prices. Comparable operating profit reached EUR 38.3 million, up from a loss of EUR 14.7 million a year earlier, when political strikes disrupted production and logistics in Finland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"801\" data-end=\"1108\">Sawn timber deliveries totalled 317,000 m\u00b3, up from 222,000 m\u00b3 in Q1 2024. Average market prices for Mets\u00e4\u2019s sawn timber increased by 20% year-on-year and by 4% from the previous quarter. However, the company noted that construction activity remains subdued across Europe, weighing on overall lumber demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1110\" data-end=\"1384\">\u201cThere are no signs of a recovery in construction industry demand for mechanical forest products,\u201d CEO Ilkka H\u00e4m\u00e4l\u00e4 said in a statement. He noted that Kerto LVL demand remained strong, while spruce plywood continued to suffer from oversupply and weak construction sentiment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1386\" data-end=\"1773\">Mets\u00e4\u2019s <em data-start=\"1394\" data-end=\"1418\">Wood Products Industry<\/em> unit, which includes engineered wood products, saw sales fall 9% year-on-year to EUR 127.2 million. Comparable operating profit declined to EUR -1.3 million, down from EUR 7.4 million in Q1 2024, hurt by ERP deployment costs and weak spruce plywood demand. Birch and spruce plywood volumes both declined, while Kerto deliveries rose by 18% to 107,000 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1775\" data-end=\"2062\">The <em data-start=\"1779\" data-end=\"1812\">Wood Supply and Forest Services<\/em> division posted sales of EUR 742.2 million (Q1 2024: EUR 615.6 million), with a comparable operating result of EUR 13.0 million (EUR 12.6 million). Mets\u00e4 delivered 9.2 million m\u00b3 of wood in the quarter, with 90% going to the Finnish forest industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2064\" data-end=\"2386\">Wood procurement remained brisk, especially in Finnish private forests, where high prices persisted. However, mild winter conditions in southern Finland hampered harvesting. Overbark pulpwood prices in the Baltics remained below Finnish levels, while in Sweden, demand and prices for both sawlogs and pulpwood were strong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2388\" data-end=\"2653\">In terms of regional supply shifts, Mets\u00e4 noted that tighter harvesting volumes in Sweden's state forests have tilted trade flows slightly towards Finland. The company does not expect Stora Enso\u2019s acquisition of Junnikkala to significantly affect its wood sourcing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2655\" data-end=\"2806\">Mets\u00e4 also confirmed the planned sale of its Latvian wood supply operations to ACA Timber, with regulatory approval expected in the first half of 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2808\" data-end=\"3079\">While wood product sales remain constrained by broader construction weakness, Mets\u00e4 is continuing efforts to stimulate domestic forestry investment, offering fertilisation discounts and promoting biodiversity-focused forest management practices among cooperative members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3081\" data-end=\"3270\">Sawn timber markets may see slight demand growth in the second quarter, according to H\u00e4m\u00e4l\u00e4, but overall visibility remains low amid the weak construction outlook across key export regions.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mets\u00e4 Group reported weak first-quarter results in its wood-related business segments, citing continued sluggish demand from the construction sector and regional disparities in wood markets.
