<\/span>The Russian forest industry has largely collapsed under the weight of international sanctions, with little sign that Western wood imports will resume, according to industry analysts. However, President Vladimir Putin remains optimistic about the sector\u2019s future, announcing new investments aimed at revitalization.<\/p>\n

Kari Kangas, portfolio manager at United Bankers, told Swedish business daily Dagens Industri<\/em> that Russia's forest industry has \"practically disappeared,\" particularly in the northwest, where wood processing capacity has sharply declined. Activity continues in Siberia, though much of it is now dominated by Chinese companies. Kangas noted that even if geopolitical conditions improve, the Finnish forest industry, among others, has already adapted away from Russian wood, reducing the likelihood of renewed imports.<\/p>\n

Resuming imports would also require significant reinvestment in Russian operations\u2014a prospect seen as highly unlikely under the current sanctions regime. Kangas emphasized that attracting Western capital would necessitate substantial political changes in Russia, a scenario he described as distant.<\/p>\n

Contrary to these assessments, President Putin recently highlighted what he described as \"huge growth potential\" for the forestry sector during a government meeting via video link. Acknowledging the loss of more than 30% of Russia\u2019s timber exports due to sanctions, Putin argued that the country\u2019s abundant forest resources provide a solid foundation for future expansion.<\/p>\n

The Russian government has pledged major investments to support the sector, including the construction of a particleboard plant in Kaluga, a decorative laminated paper and plastics plant in Leningrad, and a liquid food packaging facility in Moscow. Russian transport companies have reportedly begun reducing costs in anticipation of a potential easing of sanctions, should a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine materialize.<\/p>\n

Russia holds about 20% of the world\u2019s timber production area, but its forestry sector faces additional risks from rising wildfire activity. According to the Air Forest Protection Agency, more than 680 wildfires have been recorded across Russia so far this year, affecting over 178,000 hectares\u2014marking a sharp increase compared to 2024.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
