While group profit was down year-on-year, the S\u00f6dra Wood segment \u2013 which includes sawmill operations \u2013 returned to positive territory, supported by rising prices and productivity improvements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"1146\">Group net sales rose 7% year-on-year to SEK 8,154 million (EUR 728 million), driven by stronger pricing for softwood lumber and pulp. Operating profit totalled SEK 439 million (EUR 39 million), down from SEK 568 million (EUR 51 million) in the same period last year. The return on capital employed reached 10%, and the equity ratio stood at 61%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1148\" data-end=\"1695\">The S\u00f6dra Wood business area generated net sales of SEK 1,779 million (EUR 159 million), up from SEK 1,621 million (EUR 145 million) in Q1 2024. More notably, it posted an operating profit of SEK 14 million (EUR 1.25 million), reversing a loss of SEK 34 million (EUR 3 million) recorded in the same quarter last year. Improved market activity in Europe, rising sawn timber prices and cost savings from the company\u2019s \u201cWorld-class Efficiency\u201d programme \u2013 which delivered SEK 79 million (EUR 7 million) in savings \u2013 all contributed to the turnaround.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1697\" data-end=\"2080\">However, high raw material costs continued to squeeze margins. \u201cWhile high log prices benefit our members, they remain a challenge for our industrial operations,\u201d S\u00f6dra stated. To support its wood supply chain, the company implemented a significant price increase on sawlogs during the quarter and launched three new long-term agreements to strengthen cooperation with forest owners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2082\" data-end=\"2361\">Softwood lumber delivery volumes were slightly lower year-on-year but higher than in late 2024. European demand strengthened, and prices are expected to remain on an upward trajectory. Conditions in the US and China remained uncertain, although signs of recovery were noted in Japan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2363\" data-end=\"2679\">Despite the stronger Swedish krona \u2013 which negatively impacted earnings by over SEK 180 million (EUR 16 million) \u2013 S\u00f6dra maintained a steady course. The company reiterated its policy of not hedging currencies, noting that a SEK 1 shift against the USD can impact annual earnings by SEK 1.5 billion (EUR 134 million).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2681\" data-end=\"2908\">Looking ahead, S\u00f6dra warned that trade barriers and inflation could further dampen consumption and economic activity. \u201cWe are operating in an unpredictable world, but our focus remains on what we can influence,\u201d said the group.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Swedish forest industry group S\u00f6dra reported stable financial results for the first quarter of 2025 amid persistent global uncertainty, driven by shifting trade conditions, volatile currencies and high raw material prices.
