Daily off-port uptake reached around 70,000 cubic meters in late March, yet inventories at Chinese ports remain stubbornly high, just under 4 million cubic meters.

The seasonal spike in March supply—when many log vessels leave New Zealand—coincided with market jitters, pushing April cost-and-freight (CFR) prices down by 8–10% compared to March. This has led to a corresponding drop in at-wharf gate (AWG) prices across New Zealand by roughly NZ$10 per JAS cubic meter, with some exporters seeing reductions as steep as NZ$16 per cubic meter.

“April has seen unusually wide price spreads between ports and exporters,” said Marcus Musson, Director of Forest360. “There’s no doubt buyer sentiment is cooling, despite China’s ongoing log consumption.”

While construction-sector demand for New Zealand logs has fallen significantly since 2021, China’s furniture manufacturing sector has become a key outlet. Around 30% of furniture made in China in 2024 was exported to the United States. However, newly imposed US tariffs on Chinese imports—reaching up to 145%—are expected to severely restrict these exports, raising concerns about downstream impacts on log demand.

Musson noted that while China is not the largest furniture supplier to the US—Vietnam exports more by value—the trade tensions will ripple through supply chains. “The US imports furniture, but it also manufactures it domestically. Imported components account for 63% of the value, meaning international suppliers like New Zealand still play a role,” he said.

Currency fluctuations have added to pricing volatility. With the New Zealand dollar trading between USD 0.55 and 0.57, every one-cent shift in the exchange rate affects AWG prices by about NZ$3 per cubic meter.

Market uncertainty has also dampened activity on China’s log futures exchange, where prices have dropped by approximately 10% since early March. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s carbon prices fell sharply—from NZ$63 per NZU to NZ$55—amid political debate over phasing out forestry offsets for fossil fuel emissions.

Domestically, the market has held steady in Q2. However, Musson warned that even local clearwood products, derived from pruned logs and popular in the US DIY sector, may face future trade headwinds. “We’re temporarily exempt from US tariffs, but this could change.”

The current exemption for New Zealand timber came after lobbying from US industry groups such as the National Association of Home Builders, who argued that tariffs on softwood lumber would disrupt already fragile supply chains and worsen housing affordability in disaster-hit areas.

Despite the reprieve, Musson urged caution: “The tariff roulette wheel is still spinning. And while we may have dodged the bullet for now, the global forestry game remains anything but stable.”

New Zealand’s forestry industry is under growing pressure as global trade instability and oversupply weigh on log prices, despite a temporary exemption from US tariffs on timber and lumber products.
