The average purchase price of softwood logs in Latvia edged higher in the second half of 2024, while prices for hardwood logs declined, according to data from the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB).<\/p>\n
Pine sawlogs with a diameter up to 14 cm posted the strongest increase among softwoods, rising 10% from the first half of the year to \u20ac81.4 per cubic meter (excluding VAT). Spruce logs of the same diameter recorded a similar gain, climbing 10% to \u20ac75.8 per cubic meter .<\/p>\n
Logs in the 14\u201318 cm range also saw robust growth, with spruce and pine prices up 9%, reaching \u20ac86.5 and \u20ac84.2 per cubic meter respectively. Larger-diameter logs posted more modest increases, with spruce logs over 26 cm rising 6%, and pine and spruce logs in the 18\u201326 cm category each up 4%.<\/p>\n
Among hardwood assortments, the steepest increase was for aspen sawlogs over 24 cm in diameter, which climbed 7% to \u20ac96 per cubic meter. In contrast, category B birch plywood blocks and container blocks saw the smallest gains, each rising just 1%.<\/p>\n
The biggest overall price drop was recorded for category A birch veneer logs, which fell 10% to \u20ac150.1 per cubic meter. Other significant declines included birch sawlogs (both 18\u201324 cm and over 24 cm), aspen sawlogs (18\u201324 cm), and black alder sawlogs (18\u201324 cm), all down 7\u20138%.<\/p>\n
Compared to the second half of 2023, softwood log prices increased modestly. Spruce sawlogs up to 14 cm in diameter rose 6%, and pine logs in the 14\u201318 cm range gained 5%. Other assortments recorded slight year-on-year increases of 1\u20132%, while spruce logs over 26 cm fell by up to 8%.<\/p>\n
For hardwoods, the largest annual increase was again seen in aspen logs over 24 cm, which jumped 20% year-on-year. Black alder sawlogs over 24 cm recorded the sharpest decline, dropping 18% to \u20ac45 per cubic meter.<\/p>\n
