The total import value reached USD 1.1 billion, falling 11.4% year-on-year but increasing 19% from February.

March log imports stood at 3.17 million m³, down 6% from March 2024 but 21% higher than in February. Average unit prices for logs fell by 7%. Lumber imports reached 2.29 million m³, a 14% decline year-on-year, though also up 21% month-on-month, with a 2% rise in unit prices.

New Zealand, Russia, and Thailand remained China’s top three suppliers. Imports from Thailand dropped 8% to 460,000 m³.

A notable shift occurred in trade with the US: shipments fell 23% year-on-year to just 195,000 m³. Following the decision to suspend US logs imports, and combined with ongoing tariff tensions, US wood exports to China are expected to drop to zero in the coming months.

In terms of product categories, softwood logs and lumber accounted for 3.7 million m³ in March, down 8.6% year-on-year. Imports of red pine and Mongolian pine grew 13%, while Douglas fir volumes fell 12.7%.

In the first quarter of 2025, China’s total imports of logs and lumber reached 13.9 million m³, down 10.6% from the same period in 2024. Log imports fell 9% to 8.07 million m³, and lumber imports declined 13% to 5.84 million m³. Despite month-on-month increases in February and March, the overall downward trend reflects weak demand, holiday-related production halts, and policy changes.

The full impact of the US wood ban is expected to reshape sourcing strategies in China, accelerating the shift to suppliers such as New Zealand, Russia, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
