This is largely influenced by fluctuations in the construction sector and the performance of export markets. In particular, high interest rates in the United States and the risk of new tariffs on wood products are affecting the competitiveness of Brazilian timber internationally.

Logistical challenges at Brazil’s ports continue to be a major concern. Exporters report inadequate infrastructure, frequent transportation delays, and an overall lack of predictability. One of the key issues is unreasonable container demurrage charges, which in some cases stem from malfunctions in port operations rather than delays caused by exporters themselves.

Export procedures have also become more complex following the inclusion of species such as cumaru and ipê in Appendix II of the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). This change has led to delays in securing the necessary permits from IBAMA, Brazil’s environmental authority, further complicating the export process.

In response to the port-related issues, Brazilian authorities are working to establish a special coordination group to identify immediate improvements. The National Waterway Transportation Agency (ANTAQ) has pledged to review current regulations and streamline internal procedures. While the problem of delayed export permits has not yet been resolved, timber exporters continue to urge IBAMA to accelerate the process to avoid further disruption.

Despite stable supply levels for Brazil’s main export species such as pine and eucalyptus, the sector is under increasing pressure from rising costs. These include higher forestry and labor expenses, as well as new domestic policies such as stricter harvesting restrictions in Mato Grosso state. As a result, industry sources expect price adjustments for relevant products to begin from May to June.

Trade figures from the first quarter of 2025 show that China’s timber imports from Brazil dropped by 8% year-on-year, reaching 156,000 cubic meters. The value of these imports decreased by 1% compared to the same period in 2024, although the average price rose by 7%. If Brazilian timber prices continue to rise, Chinese importers will likely face higher costs and additional pressure in procurement. The outlook for Brazilian timber export prices remains uncertain and will be monitored closely in the coming months.

Brazilian timber suppliers are preparing for price increases between May and June 2025, as rising operational costs, port inefficiencies, and export-related complications weigh heavily on the sector.
