<\/span>Germany\u2019s wood export market is undergoing structural shifts in early 2025, with beech log exports rising to their highest level in six years, while softwood lumber trade shows signs of cooling.<\/p>\n

German beech exports posted a strong start to the year. Exports of beech logs reached 158,000 cubic meters in January and February 2025\u2014an increase of over 20% compared to the same period in 2024, and the highest level recorded since 2019. A significant driver behind this growth is a notable increase in Chinese demand. In addition, Vietnam has emerged as a new key destination, signaling rising interest from some Asian countries in high-quality European hardwoods.<\/p>\n

In contrast, Germany\u2019s softwood lumber exports experienced a marked decline. Shipments of softwood lumber fell by 16.7% year-on-year in the first two months of 2025. Exports to three of Germany\u2019s main markets\u2014Poland, China, and Italy\u2014dropped by nearly 30%. On the other hand, trade with North America showed resilience. Exports to the United States increased by 12%, while shipments to Canada were up 8%.<\/p>\n

Panel product exports remained stable. Combined exports of particleboard and oriented strand board (OSB) were largely in line with levels seen at the beginning of 2024. Among EU markets, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium posted modest growth of around 5%. The UK placed its first major post-Brexit order in early 2025. Meanwhile, exports to Poland declined by 19%, raising questions about infrastructure investment trends in Eastern Europe.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
