Russia\u2019s government is doubling down on efforts to revive the timber sector, once worth $20 billion annually<\/span>, as President Vladimir Putin highlighted the industry\u2019s potential during a video conference with senior officials on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cForestry still holds large reserves and strong prospects for growth,\u201d Putin said while commissioning three new facilities, including a full-cycle particleboard plant in the Kaluga Region, a decorative laminated plastics factory in the Leningrad Region, and a new liquid food packaging line near Moscow.<\/p>\n

The comments come as Russian lumber prices continue to rise, climbing between 11% and 14% year-on-year, according to the latest Russian Lumber Industry Insights report. The increases are largely driven by high raw material costs, labor shortages, and logistical difficulties exacerbated by disruptions to the state\u2019s timber tracking system, FGIS LK.<\/p>\n

In parallel, domestic demand is weakening. Housing completions in January fell 10% year-on-year, continuing a four-month decline. The construction slowdown is compounding concerns over elevated input costs and increasing pressure on exporters.<\/p>\n

Freight rates have also surged. Over the past year, rail delivery costs for lumber climbed 16% to China, 18% to Uzbekistan, and 7% to Japan's export terminals. New regulations\u2014mandating the installation of ERA-GLONASS tracking systems and restricting self-employed transporters\u2014are expected to push logistics costs even higher in March and beyond.<\/p>\n

Still, some transport companies began cutting rates in February, anticipating a possible market shift if sanctions ease and Western buyers return. Russia has lost more than 30% of its timber export market since the start of the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Kremlin is also dealing with fallout from an oil spill in the Kerch Strait. Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Savelyev said nearly 1,500 tonnes of oil-fuel mix had been recovered from the Volgoneft-239 tanker wreck, while efforts are underway to contain remaining spillage from three submerged tanker sections. The government has earmarked over 1 billion rubles for containment and recovery, with cofferdams being installed to prevent further contamination.<\/p>\n

Despite the environmental and economic headwinds, Moscow remains optimistic that timber\u2014alongside other resource-intensive sectors\u2014can help offset broader export losses and stimulate regional development.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
